Summer 2011
(June, July, and August)

Oh.......summer in New England. What a treat. What a special, beautiful treat.

But.

It's a relatively *short* treat....one that must be tackled strategically if one is to maximize the long days and warm temperatures.

For our outdoor exploits, we revisited many of our favorite family traditions: our hometown's cute Fourth of July parade, a visit to watch the U.S. national polo team play in Newport, RI, blueberry picking, and some more backyard camping. We made several trips to play/swim/sand at Walden Pond, splashed around in the back yards of our friends (thanks, friends!), and reunited with our favorite local playgrounds. Joe was able to spend some time with the scouts on their High Adventure in the mountains of Maine--and he continued to perfect the art of taking self portraits.

At the end of July, we took our first international vacation as a family--to Campobello Island, Canada with some good friends. It was stunningly beautiful and oh-so relaxing (can Canada be otherwise? Ummmm, no).  Traveling with another family made it feel like we were all bringing our own friend along on the family vacation---we'd highly recommend it! We searched for sand dollars, built sandcastles in a thick fog, caught Acadia National Park, all while being <7 hours from home. O, Canada........

In other summer news, Ian got his very first library card, contracted (and was cured of) Lyme Disease, took a yoga class, and played soccer; we camped in the living room during Hurricane Irene and froze more strawberry jam than necessary; and Blake patiently came along as we traveled to and fro, learned about 75 more words and began showing interest in joining the ranks of the bipeds. It was a lovely summer, to be sure.
